How Safe Is The Covid Vaccine?

As everyone should know the coronavirus outbreak that caused a pandemic early this year seem to be having an uptick in new cases and deaths moving into year 2021. The United States has charted 17.9 million cases so far with 318k deaths. The numbers are scary.

There have been many different rumors, facts, and views on this subject, leading to scares and lack and information.

The coronavirus has been around since the 1960's, which included 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1, which are the alpha and beta of coronavirus. "What the difference with the Novel Coronavirus?" "Why so many people died?"

According to the National Institute of Health, The virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2, is part of a large family of coronaviruses. Coronaviruses usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, like the common cold. However, SARS-CoV-2 can cause serious illness and even death. Why people’s COVID-19 symptoms vary so greatly isn’t fully understood."

" What is Herd Immunity?"

Herd immunity is when a herd develops immunity to a pathogen and its no longer able to spread. Some experts says," Herd immunity is impossible with the covid-19 Sars Virus because there is no way of knowing how many people is immune." In order for herd immunity to be effective the virus would have to stimulate long term immunity. Without knowing the facts immunity can take months or even a lifetime to achieve.

" Covid 19 Vaccine "

As of today 556,000 people in the United States have received the vaccine. Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca, are a few of the companies that have been FDA approved. They are on Phase 3 study and have concluded that the study have met all primary efficacy endpoints. According to Pfizer New Press, to date, the Data Monitoring Committee for the study has not reported any serious safety concerns related to the vaccine. A review of unblinded reactogenicity data from the final analysis which consisted of a randomized subset of at least 8,000 participants 18 years and older in the phase 2/3 study demonstrates that the vaccine was well tolerated, with most solicited adverse events resolving shortly after vaccination. The only Grade 3 (severe) solicited adverse events greater than or equal to 2% in frequency after the first or second dose was fatigue at 3.8% and headache at 2.0% following dose 2. Consistent with earlier shared results, older adults tended to report fewer and milder solicited adverse events following vaccination.

"Who will get the vaccine?"

Healthcare worker and long term care facility staff will get the first round of the vaccine so that they can continue to care for those who needs them the most. The first FDA approval for the vaccine was the Pfizer-BioNTech company. Each state is prioritizing accordingly with HCW and LTC receiving vaccines at the Phase 1a level. The next Phase is still to be determined.

" How safe is the vaccine ?"

According to the CDC, so far the vaccine is safe with minor side effects. Some of the side effects are sore arm, flu-like symptoms- fever, chills , and headache. There are reports of severe allergic reactions as well. An Alaskan woman reported having shortness of breathe 10 minutes after the injection. There are reports of 6 anaphylaxis cases due to the vaccine that's under review. If you have allergies always let your doctor know before receiving a vaccine. A few people have died, as rumored it was due to the Covid vaccine. Other news outlet have clarified that those details were indeed false. Like all medication, it's always a chance of a reaction. 63 % of Americans are willing to receive the vaccine and have built up confidence. The other percentage is not so eager due to safety rumor, lack of information, and uncertainty, which is common with a new vaccine.

Anyone that experience the virus knows that it's harsh and keeping a strong immune system is key. The virus caused flu-like symptoms-fever, chills, headaches, body aches, diarrhea, stomach aches, vision problems, shortness of breath, heart attaches, strokes, muscle pains, and deaths. Could we face another virus like this? Of course we can, with so many different viruses that make their way into the human body, it's better to be ready to attack it first. The body's immune system is designed to fight those nasty virus and diseases but we have to be willing to keep it strong. As the author of this blog, I have experienced the virus first hand and know it can be a scary moment of uncertainty of life or death. I fought with teas , water, rest, and keeping my body infused with vitamin c. Not every vitamin c is the same. I was able to find the last 3 boxes of vitamin c on the self at Walgreens, where the supply was scarce for anything relating to vitamins, pain medications, cold, and flu medications. The supplement that helped me the most was Beta-Glucans with Immune Booster.
